Students at Havelock Junior School go back in time

Year 6 study the Saxons and Vikings in the Autumn term and the Viking Day is an important part of their enrichment. They learn about Viking everyday life and what is was like for a Viking warrior.  During the day they take part in the various workshops and dress up in historical costume. A cross-curricular approach is used throughout so the children are fully immersed in the topic. They write Viking sagas and produce Norse artwork following the experience.

Year 5 shared their learning about Life In Ancient Egypt this term by creating their own museum exhibition and inviting other children and parents to visit. The children produced their own exhibits based on their research. They made mummies, jewellery, models of the Nile, pyramids and tombs. Visitors were shown around by the year 5 children acting as tour guides. Early in the year, they enjoyed an Egyptian Day and took part in dressing up as Egyptians and taking part in history workshops led by an expert . During the topic , the children wrote newspaper reports about finding Tutankhamun’s tomb, instructions for mummification, stories set in Egypt and non-chronological reports.
